Planning a Fall Festival in Children's Ministry

It is that time of year when many churches begin to think about Halloween alternatives to attract kids and parents to Christ instead of the evil traditions rooted in what seems to be a fun holiday for kids everywhere. Why not consider a Fall Festival? It is all the rage these days for churches who want to provide a fun environment where kids can still celebrate the season, but with a twist on the harvest.

Planning a Fall Festival can be anywhere from simple to quite elaborate. It depends on your church's style and personal belief system. One thing that all Fall Festivals have in common is the fact that it celebrates the harvest and the bountiful life God has given us through His Son, Jesus Christ. In fact, some churches call it a Harvest Festival instead.

Activities to do at a Fall Festival many times include carnival games. Simply ask your congregation to donate bags of candy throughout the months of September and October as prizes for winning the games. Just make sure the candies are individually wrapped.

Planning a Fall Festival in Children's Ministry

Silent auctions or door prize drawings are also a big hit at Fall Festival celebrations. Donations for prizes can be made by local businesses and individuals, and some churches will make a small budget for these items as well. Kids and adults love to participate in silent auctions and door prizes.

Another favorite activity that kids and adults like to participate in is a Cake Walk. It is musical chairs, and the winning seat gets to pick a delicious homemade cake from a table of entries to take home as the prize. Most churches have expert cake bakers who are more than happy to donate to the cause.

Instead of encouraging kids to come dressed in any costume, you can hold a Bible costume contest for different age groups. This gives children a chance to dress up, but as a biblical character, and then be entered in a contest to win a cool prize. Again, prizes can be simple and come as donations from area businesses or individuals.

A pie judging contest is also a favorite at Fall Festivals. Pick two or three people from your congregation, usually the minister and one or two other elders, to be the judges. They taste each pie and decide who has baked the best pie. Then give the winner a ribbon for their baking abilities. The only stipulation for entering a pie for judging is that it has to be homemade. No store bought entries here!

As you can see, planning a Fall Festival takes time to think things through. You will need a planning committee. In some churches, it is the Children's Ministry committee who gets to plan all the fun. Other churches assign a Bible study group or Bible class to plan the fun events. The important thing is that the children are offered a fun time without missing any parts of Halloween traditions. In fact, their memories of a church Fall Festival will have many more happy returns in their life than you could ever imagine.

Free Schools for Troubled Teens

Parents are not at all happy to see their children destroying their own lives. Troubled teens often find success through a structured, emotional growth in a school environment. Therefore parents send their children to boarding or military style schools where all the programs are designed to help the troubled teens. But, it can be difficult for the family to have a teen move to a boarding or military school facility. As a result, many parents choose the service of alternative schools, such as free schools for troubled teens.

Free schools for troubled teens are non-hierarchical, non-institutional forms of learning which share skills, information and knowledge on a community basis. A free school for troubled teens has programs specially designed to assist the troubled teens to receive an education. In general, a free school is an attempt of individuals who act collectively and autonomously to generate educational opportunities and skill-sharing within their communities.

These free schools are dedicated to social change through free education and community building. They encourage self-reliance, critical consciousness, and personal development, living connections between themselves and their community. A free school often operates without any business propositions. The schools usually have no single street addresses. The venues of their classes and meetings may be a living room, a park, or any other community space.

Free Schools for Troubled Teens

The schools are able to design programs to help the teens deal with the problems that they face. They deal with teenagers who have social and emotional problems that are reflected in their behavior. Their course programs are also designed to provide physical and spiritual guidance for this group of teens. Most of them are equipped to deal with teens that have ADD or ODD. These schools also operate rehabilitation programs that help the teens to become drug and alcohol free.

All free school teen classes are conducted away from all types annoying things which influence these troubled teens and they learn how to rely on themselves to become self-sufficient. There are many volunteer opportunities available like design work, outreach, fund-raising, special events, or technical support.

Statistics on Obesity in Children - 3 Very Shocking and Surprising Statistics!

With the growing rate of obesity in America, it is very important to understand what exactly is causing our children to become obese. Here are three shocking statistics on obesity in children:

1) - Thirty percent of kids today eat fast food... Every single day of the year! With fast food chains lurking around every corner of our streets, it's no wonder why so many of our children find convenience in satisfying their hunger by visiting these nearby "fat food" dealers.

2) - Studies show that obese children are four times as likely to suffer from depression that their classmates of normal weight. Obese children are bullied around all the time. It's not fair. Children who are obese sometimes even develop social anxiety disorders around their weight, and have a hard time even going out of the house. It's important to let our overweight children know that they are loved despite of their obesity.

Statistics on Obesity in Children - 3 Very Shocking and Surprising Statistics!

3) - Twenty percent of preschool children are obese, and thirty percent of children as a whole are obese. Studies show that by 2010, nearly fifty percent of children will be obese! Children don't always know how to eat and exercise healthily. They need to be shown by their parents that exercising and eating well can not only be good for their health, but can also be very fun!

As you can see, it is so very important that we take care of our children's health now before they develop the horrible side effects of being obese, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, joint diseases, and depression, to name a few.

Teen Pregnancy Solutions

We are living in a world today, a world with innovation and liberty. It is a fact that the new generation is always on the stage of discovery. They tend to try different things especially when it comes to sex; we must admit that teens are curious about it. Statistics say that the rate of birth in teenagers has risen to 200 percent since the 60's, and one out of four women gets pregnant at the age of 18 and half of it will be pregnant by the age of 21. If this is the case, parents must be cautious in educating their children about teen pregnancy.

Reasons of pregnancy:

Experts say that several reasons affects teen pregnancy. One of the main reasons is because they believe that the baby will bring changes in their lives like having some friends or getting closer to their families and their boyfriend. But what they don't know is that having a baby adds more responsibility to their life. Pregnancy is a life changing experience. Parents must tell their children that pregnancy is not just a game of playhouse; they must instill in their kids that pregnancy is not a solution to a problem, or should be used as an excuse for rebellion. Pregnancy will change their lives for a lifetime.

Teen Pregnancy Solutions

Effects to a country:

Many countries have been promoting contraceptives and safe sex for teens, largely because of the astounding inflation in population rate these past decades. One good example of this is the Red China. They implemented the two child policy because of over population. If a citizen is expecting a third child, the mother is obliged to abort the baby or they will be executed for violating the law. That is why authorities in China are usually one of the top rated users of pregnancy test like the elisa kits test to determine pregnancy among its women early on.

Statistics say that population in China has risen to 2 billion in the 90s alone. The government is in the verge of scarcity of resources and famine if this would continue. It is believe that, if all people in China will jump together, it would cause an earthquake in the Pacific and may cause catastrophe to nearby countries. A seemingly hilarious idea, but would actually cause serious impact if taken seriously.

Solution:

Teenagers are always curious when it comes to sex. They would do anything just to ease their selfish pleasure and we cannot hold them back if they are determined to do it. Teenagers are usually common buyers of pregnancy kits or elisa kits. At such an early age, they already know what to do and what tests to perform when suspecting pregnancy. So, before innocent flirting and youthful adventures lead to pregnancy, parents should make them understand the responsibilities and consequences of pre-marital sex.

Many Christians are against sex education because they claim that it is immoral to teach young children about sex. This practice will lose their innocence if they would be exposed to such immorality. In my own opinion, sex education must be taught at home and in schools. It is the best place for such topics where teenagers would best grasp the underlying cost and gain sex.

Take note that abortion is not a solution to teen pregnancy. If you would know the side effects of abortion you would think twice before doing it. It is said that abortion can poison the mother if some parts of the child that has been aborted is left inside the mother's womb.

I would take the big NO to abortion because it not only unethical but against morality as well.

Jobs For 15 Year Olds - Great Jobs Your Teen Will Appreciate!

It's summer time!

If you are 15, Do you have an idea on what jobs you are interested in already?

If you are a 15-year-old who wants a job and don't have any idea about what job you might look for, would you mind looking at teen jobs and earning extra money?

Jobs For 15 Year Olds - Great Jobs Your Teen Will Appreciate!

Yes, even you are just 15, you can still find summer jobs. Instead of going online to devote your time to playing video games for hours, why not do something profitable?

By doing this, you do not just earn, but you also learn at the same time.

From an employer's perspective, most employers won't hire a 15 year age, because of the limited availability of that age group, but several restaurants will make huge efforts to work with those age limits. Whenever you apply for ANY job, leave your attitude at the door about what you will and will not do for work. You'll have to prove what you can do before you start making demands.

You are asking for a job from a business owner. Dress appropriately for the job you are applying for. Good manners and courtesy will open a lot of doors.

Some of the people you ask for a job will ask you for references. Be prepared for that and check with your teachers, anyone in your church, coaches, people you did any casual labor for (even if it was to take care of their pets while they were away), friends, other parents who know you well.

Make sure you have their name, address and phone number on you if you are asked for references and also let them know that they may receive a phone call about you from a potential employer. Surprised references don't make good references.

Some of the most common ideas for summer jobs for 15 years old are listed here. There is one or two of these teen jobs that will match your interests. Read on, and enjoy the rest of the summer with the best summer jobs of your choice!

Check out these job opportunities for 15-year-olds:

• Offices - any offices where they need people to answer phones, file, greet customers, do office clean-up, or other generic office duties.

• Grocery stores where they want people to greet customers checking out and sack-up their groceries or carry bags to cars, bring back grocery carts from the parking lot, re-stock shelves...

• Retail stores often need summer sale help. Some even let you just work doing simple tasks like keeping aisles and shelves straightened.

• Restaurant s are great for hiring hostess and bus people at these ages. Re-think the McDonalds gig - you might be surprised how much you can buy with your own spending money.

• Hotels and lodges - especially if there are some nearby - are great opportunities to look for jobs because they have so many needs with a constant customer turnover.

• Are you a sports enthusiast? How about checking out your local amusement park, baseball park, stadium, or local soccer (hockey, football, basketball, etc... ) park - communities have park and recreation departments that would give you ideas.

• Plus, don't forget that often an athletic club hires teens to pick up towels (from the voice of experience coming at you - this is actually fun because the people there are fun and kind to you - they are glad to be in a gym).

• And don't forget golfing - miniature and driving ranges too.

• If you can get a work permit then you can get a job at a gas station - this was my very first job at 15-years-old and I loved being outdoors in the summertime and earning money!

• Work in other people's lawns. If you happen to have family members with large lawns or fields to mow and you visit them fairly often, you might want to take a look at working using a lawn mower. This summer job is so simple. You just have to make use of the equipment to trim the grass in the entire field. No matter how large the field may be, this job is still simple. You can ask for payment for every hour that you have worked for or the area which you have done mowing already. Can you trim hedges? Edge lawns? Add extra services to your poster or flyer so people ask you for those services and pay extra.

• If you work with a local car wash, you are paid for every hour you are on the job - some places even pay by the car. Or you can be your own business owner and start a corner car wash in your home carport - as long as you don't violate any city or county ordinances or rules where you live.

• Media - Often young journalists are needed to write in the teen sections for the media, teen magazines and even online bloggers need young writers to capture that market segment.

• Summer camps sometimes hire 15-year-olds as counselors - best to find out about these a year in advance, so if you missed it this year there is always next year! In the meantime you can get extra experience in the big brother-big sister programs at the YMCA and church groups.

• Can you teach someone something over the summer - How to pay guitar? How to speak Spanish? French? Are you good in math? If you can teach people, then be a tutor for people - or other kids your age - who want to learn or are struggling in school subjects and need your help.

There are several teen job options for you if you really want to earn money this summer. You do not need any additional studying or specific training to do well on these summer jobs. Just enjoy the fact that you are earning your own spending money.

When summer is over, you will definitely be proud of what you have achieved. If your boss wants other teens like you - share the opportunity with your friends and classmates.

Remember, though that a good referral for a hard worker gets you kudos, but a bad referral makes you look like a risk. So, be choosy with the people who you recommend to your boss - they are a direct reflection on you.

For help on summer job information you'll find a great resource for teens, parents, employers and other general information at the government site designed specifically for teen employment - http://www.youthrules.dol.gov/

Three Effective Ways How to Teach Kids and Teens About Mandalas

Mandalas are geometric patterns starting from a central dot, working outward in repetitive patterns, often integrating symbols and vibrant colour. A circle within a circle is a universal pattern full of symbolic meaning. It is simple yet contains an element of the eternal. Mandalas remind us of our relation to the infinite world both beyond and within our bodies and minds.

There are numerous ways to teach kids and teens about the beauty, complexity, universal nature and healing powers of mandalas. Three of which will be discussed here along with specific examples and applications.

Explore Mandalas in Nature

Three Effective Ways How to Teach Kids and Teens About Mandalas

Mandalas are all around us. One simply has to walk through a garden to find beautiful flowers in bloom and appreciate their circular, repetitive patterns. Increasing awareness of the many manifestations of mandalas in nature can begin by examining an atom. Each cell is a mandala. On a grander scale the universe with the rotation of the planets around the sun or the shape of the galaxies and other cosmic manifestations demonstrate mandalas as a fundamental form. Mandalas are present in almost all scientific studies from geology and biology to physics and chemistry. Becoming aware of their ever present nature allows individuals to find mandalas in previously unrecognized locations.

Examine the Universal Cultural Use of Mandalas

Mandalas are found throughout the world. From Tibetan monks who create sand mandalas as a form of devotion, to Navajo sand painting used during complex healing ceremonies, mandalas are present in nearly every culture and religion. Showing kids and teens the universal nature of this art form helps to build connections and cultural understanding. Two easy ways to teach the use of mandalas by different groups include:

Research Project: Providing a list of cultures/religions (Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Celtic, MesoAmerican, Aboriginal, etc), allow children to search for the use of mandalas by that culture/religion. This is highly effective in partners or small groups where each group is assigned one culture and then asked to present their findings to the class. Matching Game: Using photos of various mandalas and a world map, match the mandala with its geographic location, include a discussion on the similarities and differences.
Create Personal Mandalas

Once kids and teens have a basic understanding of mandalas, creating their own mandala allows for ownership and integration of the principles being taught.

Personal Mandalas: Often personal mandalas are used as a form of meditation or colour therapy and assist in calming the mind and nourishing the soul. Producing specific, multicoloured mandalas is a creative and individual process. Any variety of medium can be used including sand, shells, tiles, string, chalk, collage, crayons, paints, glass, fabric, etc. However, it is important to maintain the shape and repetitive geometric patterns classic to mandalas.

Group Mandalas: Similarly group mandalas offer many personal rewards but also incorporate cooperation and teamwork. These are wonderful expressions to celebrate workshops, events or special celebrations. Connections are strengthened and the use of symbolism explored as a group works together to create a representation of their time together.

Mandalas are powerful. Their presence throughout nature and use by many cultures demonstrate their connection with humanity and the universe. Teaching kids and teens about mandalas helps them to more fully understand the world and themselves.

Visit Mandalas Universal Across Cultures for visuals and explanations of the use of mandalas by a variety of cultural and religious groups.

Childhood Obesity and Water

When you open your refrigerator to pour your child a drink, what do you reach for? Is it Kool-aid, or soda, or a fruit drink? A small decision in the course of our day that we don't really think much about is now having a major impact on the health of children all over the United States. It has been determined that the lack of water in children's diets is actually a huge factor in childhood obesity. It's not the lack of hydration as much as it is the choice of what the children are drinking. The fact that they are not choosing to drink water instead of other sugar-sweetened drinks is not only helping to cause obesity, but also other health issues. It is high time that we as adults start helping our children make better choices for a healthy future.

According to the Center for Disease Control, over the last 20 years, obesity in preschoolers and teenagers has doubled, while obesity in children aged 6-11 years old has tripled. These facts are horrifying and need to be given a good hard look.

One approach that has been deemed successful is the substitution of sugar-sweetened drinks for water. In Germany, a study was done on second and third graders in different schools. In some of the schools, more water fountains were added and water bottles were handed out to the children so that they could fill them at the beginning of the day. Added to that, teachers began to throw into their lesson plans some healthy benefits of drinking water. At the start of the school year, there were no great differences in the groups of kids at the different schools. However, by the end of the year, the students who had more exposure to drinking water and learning about water were thirty percent less likely to be overweight.

Childhood Obesity and Water

The theory behind this study is that replacing the sugary drinks for water reduced the children's caloric intake. About ninety percent of children in the United States consume sugar-sweetened beverages every day. These include soda, fruit drinks, punches, sports drinks, and sweetened tea. The calories from these drinks add up to over 10% of their daily calorie intake. Switching to water makes even more sense because there is no evidence that their food consumption increases with substituting their water. What that means is that, on average, 235 calories would be completely eliminated from their diet if they chose to drink water instead. Since one in every five calories consumed is from a liquid, what we choose to drink affects our weight.

If obesity isn't enough reason to make a change, there are other health factors involved in drinking so many sugary drinks. Sipping juice and/or soda all day may lead to tooth decay. Soda leads to bone loss. Obesity is actually coming close to overriding smoking as the number one killer in the United States. Obesity may lead to diabetes and heart disease, which can start in children and be carried on throughout adulthood. Lastly, overweight teens have a 70% chance of becoming overweight adults. All of these are very scary and very real risks to be exposing to your child. Developing and promoting good water drinking habits can be a life-saver...literally.

Many adults like to place the blame on McDonald's, soda companies, commercials, and movies. However, poor parenting habits are more likely the problem. It is said that the first three years of a child's life are crucial to developing habits. If you start your children with good, healthy habits, they will continue them throughout their lives because that is what they are used to and have come to like. In schools, the children walk right by the water fountain to reach a soda or juice machine. I think it is fair to say if these vending machines are eliminated, they will have no choice but to drink what is readily available. Why not promote drinking water at home and at school? Consistency is important for children so that they are not receiving mixed signals about what is important. Nothing is more important than their health.

If you are unsure about how to help your child make the change to water, here are some good tips to encourage them. Install a water filtration system at home. If any odor and/or chemical taste is removed from your tap water, they will more than likely enjoy a fresh glass of water. It will be more refreshing and actually taste better. Also, it is a healthier choice than bottled water which may contain contaminants and be bottled in a carbon-based container that could leak into the water itself. You can try a process that may be easier to them by switching first from Kool-aid to a lighter powdered green tea or sugar-free lemonade. Gradually you will then be able to put a filtered water pitcher in the refrigerator and they will be more apt to drink it.

If you put ice in their water it will be more refreshing and thirst quenching. Also, it may help to use a fun cup and/or straw to give them the water in. Using the plastic shaped ice cubes may also make it fun for them. These tricks will turn their focus from what is inside the cup to the fun parts of drinking it. It definitely helps to use a refrigerator with a water dispenser. If you keep Dixie cups close to the refrigerator, they will enjoy being able to dispense the water themselves whenever they are thirsty. Making soda a treat is an excellent idea. If you allow them to have it only on special occasions like going out to dinner or to the movies, they will have something to look forward to and it will become routine. If they are missing the fizz of soda, a flavored seltzer or club soda are good substitutions. Last and most important, this should be done as a family. If you are practicing what you preach, they will see you drinking water and that will become the norm in the household. You need to be a positive influence.

Something important to remember is that the goal is not to make children lose weight. Children are always growing, so the point of switching to water is to slow the weight gain. If they are already overweight, switching to drinking water instead will help them to even out as they grow, not lose all their weight. It needs to be healthy.

Obesity in children is a nationwide issue. Something needs to be done about it so that all these children do not become obese adults. If our generation starts now teaching good, healthy habits, they will grow to teach their own children the very same habits. So, though it may take a little effort at home and in schools, the health of our children and their future is absolutely worth it. Changing our habits to drinking water instead of sugary drinks is such an easy way out of a nationwide epidemic. It doesn't include dieting our children, affecting their nutrition, or even taking a pill to fix the problem. If every parent and every teacher in every school cared enough to do their part, obesity will no longer be a huge problem in the United States. Just a little education and a lot of promoting good habits will save our children from unnecessary health problems in the future. Definitely worth a shot!
